Every Amazon seller hits this math problem eventually: your monthly shipment volume is somewhere between 5 and 15 CBM. You're too big for LCL to feel cheap, but too small for a full container to feel justified. Do you pay for space you don't use, or pay a premium per cubic meter?

What FCL and LCL actually mean for FBA sellers

FCL (Full Container Load): you rent the entire container. A 20GP holds about 28 CBM. A 40HQ holds about 68 CBM. You pay a flat rate for the box whether you fill it or not.

LCL (Less than Container Load): you share a container with other shippers. You pay per cubic meter or per kilogram, whichever is higher. A freight consolidator combines cargo from multiple sellers into one container at origin, then splits it at destination.

On paper, LCL seems like the rational choice when you're under 15 CBM. In practice, the math gets ugly when you add the hidden costs.

The 2026 rate breakdown — real numbers

Let's use a real scenario: Shenzhen to Amazon ONT8 in Southern California. Standard general cargo, no dangerous goods, DDP door-to-FBA.

The crossover point

At 8 CBM, LCL is cheaper in absolute dollars. You pay about $1,200forLCLversus$1,200forLCLversus3,000 for a half-empty 20GP container. That feels smart.

But here's the calculation most sellers miss: your per-unit landed cost determines your Amazon profitability, not your freight invoice total.

If you can fill even 18-20 CBM, your per-unit freight cost drops below LCL. And you get your own container — no sharing, no consolidation delays, no cargo mixed with another seller's shipment.

The hidden costs of LCL that sellers don't account for

1. Consolidation delay: LCL cargo sits at the origin CFS (container freight station) for 2-7 days waiting for enough cargo to fill the shared container. If you're on a tight restock timeline, those 2-7 days matter.

2. Deconsolidation delay: same thing at the destination port. LCL cargo gets unloaded, sorted, and re-trucked. FCL cargo goes directly from port to Amazon.

3. Higher damage risk: your cartons are handled at origin CFS (loading), at the port (transloading), and at destination CFS (unloading). Each touch point increases damage probability. FCL: your cartons go from factory to warehouse to container — and don't get touched again until the Amazon dock.

4. Customs hold risk: in LCL, your cargo shares a container with other sellers. If US Customs flags another seller's cargo in your shared container for inspection, your shipment gets held too — even if your paperwork is perfect. In FCL, your container is yours alone.

When to switch from LCL to FCL

Three thresholds make the decision easy:

• Under 8 CBM: stick with LCL. The container cost isn't justified.
• 8-15 CBM: do the per-unit math. If your product value is high enough that a $1 freight difference per unit doesn't matter, LCL's flexibility is worth it. If you're moving low-margin goods where every cent of landed cost matters, FCL starts winning around 12 CBM.
• Above 15 CBM: go FCL. Always.
